ABOUT US
Bright Futures Farm is a trusted, well-respected 501(c)(3) equine
charity wholly dedicated to helping horses in need
OUR MISSION: Our mission began in 2000, and since then, we’ve dedicated our efforts to save horses of all breeds from abuse, neglect, and slaughter. We have rescued horses from near death, starvation, abuse and neglect, and we have assisted owners who have reached out for help for their beloved steeds when they can no longer care for them. Every horse, upon arrival at our facility, is examined by a skilled volunteer, and then by our veterinarian. Based upon our veterinarian’s findings, we begin a plan for rehab (if necessary) with the ultimate goal being a healthy horse.
Our founder, Bev Dee, has volunteered for CANTER Pennsylvania, working with owners, trainers, and the HBPA a t Presque Isle Downs Racetrack in Erie PA during racing season to help Thoroughbreds that are coming off the track, find new homes. She knows that Bright Futures Farm can’t take them all, and has found this to be a gratifying way to help more Thoroughbreds. Bright Futures Farm also provides permanent sanctuary to elderly and disabled horses that have often been callously discarded because they were too old and no longer useful. There are currently 12 horses in permanent residence at our farm.
Bright Futures Farm is proud to be accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (www.thoroughbredaftercare.org) and we have been awarded the Guidestar Platinum Seal, which demonstrates our commitment to transparency. Guidestar (www.guidestar.org) is the premier source for up to date, accurate information about charities across the country. Network for Good is a well-known and trusted fundraising platform for charities, and you will find many testimonials for Bright Futures Farm on their site, www.networkforgood.org.
We operate strictly by the book and always with the goal of putting the welfare of our horses first. Our horses are regularly examined and treated by veterinarians, farriers, and equine dentists, and are fed top-quality hay and feed, including Southern States and Purina. Our horses are also given chiropractic treatments, acupuncture, PEMF and massage therapy as needed.
THE STORY OF BRITE
In 2000, Bright Futures Farm began with one horse – Brite Decision, a Thoroughbred ex-racer who literally ran his heart out for his owners time and again. Saving him was the best decision Bev Dee ever made.
When Bev saw Brite for the first time, he walked slowly, limping and unsteady, from the back of his stall to greet her. Despite his obvious pain, he was gentle and friendly. Bev connected with him immediately, and knew that there was something special about this beautiful, pitiful horse. When she asked the woman who ran the rescue about him, she was told that two veterinarians had recommended euthanasia because he was in such desperately poor health. Bev asked if she could adopt Brite to try and save him, and to her surprise, the woman simply said, “take him."
Bev knew that there was no guarantee that Brite would survive, but she wanted to help the sweet horse that had captured her heart. She immediately took Brite home. She made an emergency call to the vet, and found out that Brite had several hairline fractures of sesamoid bones that had healed, and founder in both front feet. Brite’s prognosis was questionable, but Bev was determined to give it a try. After 36 long months of care and rehabilitation, Brite was finally healed enough to be able to live comfortably.
Today, Brite Decision is happy, healthy and sound, and is the heart and soul of the rescue efforts at Bright Futures Farm. He is always kind, never complains, and will happily do whatever is asked of him. He even babysits new horses at the rescue like a doting uncle—almost like he knows it’s his job to help the new horses heal and grow strong again. “Brite Decision" was the best decision Bev Dee ever made, and he is the sole reason that she founded Bright (Brite) Futures Farm. Since 2000, Brite remains the inspiration to save other neglected, abused and at-risk horses at Bright Futures Farm.
