The entire sales price, less any shipping costs we incur, will be added to the funds sent to the equine charities from calendar sales. A talented artist, Curtis is the current caretaker of 34-year-old Border Run, Secretariat’s oldest-known living offspring.

SECRETARIAT’S LEGACY

A 2023 Collector’s Edition Calendar That Celebrates the Legacy of Secretariat, One of the Greatest Racehorses of All Time

This collector’s edition calendar is the sixth in a series that celebrates the legacy of one of the greatest racehorses of all time, Secretariat. It is part of a research project by writer/photographer Patricia McQueen on Secretariat as a sire. (Scroll down to read more about Patricia and her work.)

The theme of the 2023 calendar is Terlingua and her descendants. The horses featured in this calendar are:

Terlingua, Secretariat’s stakes-winning daughter born in 1976.

  • Storm Cat, Terlingua’s second foal; he won the grade 1 Young America Stakes at two and went on to become one of the most important stallions in history.
  • Chapel of Dreams, the mare’s third foal; she became a multiple graded stakes winner on the grass before continuing the Terlingua legacy through her own daughters.
  • Giant’s Causeway, Storm Cat’s best son followed his European Horse of the Year campaign by becoming a leading sire himself.
  • Freud, a full brother to Giant’s Causeway whose niche as a sire came in New York, where he has been among the leading sires for years.
  • Bricks and Mortar, a son of Giant’s Causeway whose undefeated campaign in 2019 earned him the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year.
  • Gun Runner, out of a Giant’s Causeway mare, who became Horse of the Year as a 4-year-old in 2017 after an excellent 3-year-old season.
  • American Pharoah, whose Triple Crown sweep in 2015 was the first in 37 years; through his dam
    Littleprincessemma, he’s a great-grandson of Storm Cat.
  • Wise Dan, a two-time Horse of the Year whose great-grandsire is Storm Cat; he carries another dose of Secretariat through his second dam Askmysecretary.
  • Pink Lloyd, a gallant gelding who is also a great-grandson of Storm Cat; he won eight Sovereign Awards in Canada, including a Horse of the Year title and five consecutive honors as champion sprinter.
  • Into Mischief, yet another great-grandson of Storm Cat; he has dominated the leading sire list for the last few years.

Finally, there is a beautiful photo of the great Secretariat himself before his Belmont Stakes victory, courtesy of The Tony Leonard Collection.

This 12-month calendar runs from January 2023 through December 2023, and measures 12" wide and 18" tall when opened. For buyers in the United States, the price is $25, which includes free shipping within the USA.

All profits from the sale of the calendar are allocated to three worthy equine rescue and sanctuary organizations, each of which has been a caretaker of at least one of the horses featured in  this series. They are Bright Futures Farm and LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society, both accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance; and Victory Alliance Ranch, supporting veterans and special needs children.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Patricia McQueen spent 40 years photographing Thoroughbreds, and her work has been featured in publications around the world. She has always had a special interest in descendants of Secretariat, as her fascination with the Triple Crown winner has never waned.

Also a journalist, many years ago she began a research project for a book on Secretariat as a sire, which will be published as Secretariat’s Legacy in early 2023. Everyone knows he made his mark as a broodmare sire – through his mares, he is responsible for such sires as Storm Cat, A.P. Indy, Summer Squall, Gone West, Chief’s Crown and Volksraad (in New Zealand), among many others further down the  generations, including Tapit. Can you imagine Thoroughbred racing today without those sires?

Yet his general sire record is often unjustly criticized. Patricia wanted to set the record straight by telling the stories of his sons and daughters – not just outstanding champions like Lady’s Secret and Risen Star, but others that, with a little more luck, could have had a much bigger impact on his overall record as a sire.

Stories of these horses are appearing on the Thoroughbred Racing Commentary website. There are also stories of Secretariat’s last sons and daughters, which have been featured in previous calendars under the Secretariat’s Living Legends theme.
