Bright Futures Farm is an equine charity whose primary focus is re-homing off the track Thoroughbreds...horses that can no longer race due to disinterest or injury…horses unwanted by their owners and sent to auction where most are purchased for slaughter. Our dedication has grown to include providing sanctuary for older horses that are unwanted after their "useful years" are over, including older stallions that cannot be gelded due to the risk of complications. We are always in need of foster homes. When you foster a horse you help us save one more from harm. Fostering expenses are tax-deductible. If you have room, please ask us about our foster program. |

At times we are asked to take horses that are at risk when our stalls are full and the need is immediate. We would love to take each and every horse we are told about, but we are logistically and financially unable to do so quickly. Therefore, we offer the owner an alternative. The horses listed below are available through the owner directly unless stated otherwise. We will disclose to you everything about the horse that has been disclosed to us. While we feel that what we write below is accurate, we can not guarantee the statements made by the owner. We encourage anyone interested in buying any horse to have the horse vetted prior to purchase. We also STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to be a responsible owner and plan for your horses' retirement. The last thing I want to happen to any of these magnificent creatures is for someone to buy one of them, then sell him indiscriminately or neglect his basic needs and leave him starving in a back yard. Or worse... to send him to an auction where he will most likely be sold to slaughter. They usually don't go to a loving family. That's a huge misconception. If you know that you cannot treat these animals as if they were your children...don't take them. These creatures have emotions and feelings too, and they've served their owners well... just as they will serve you. Give that back to them when you can no longer ride them. Keep them forever and keep them safe or contact a reputable rescue if you need to re-home your horse. Please only contact the individuals listed below if you meet the qualifications to ride/handle the horse you are looking at, have the space and finances to take on the care of the horse. Adequate care, meeting all basic needs (regular vetting, dental care, farrier care, food and unexpected expenses) runs approximately $2000 a year per horse.
Coastal Turmoil (Coastal) (Coastal Storm - ) 2004 dark brown Thoroughbred gelding. 15 3hh. pastern, LH coronet.
Coastal, grandson of Storm Cat, found a home with a friend two years ago. Anne has sustained a broken leg with a prognosis of long term recovery, and can not care for Coastal. He has chips in his LF knee. Surgery would not benefit him at this point. He is sound and can possibly be lightly ridden. He has not been ridden since he retired from racing at age 3 in 2007. Coastal is very kind, laid back and gets along with other horses. He needs to find a new home quickly (as of 11/8/09). If you have room, please consider Coastal.
Coastal is located in Federalsburg, MD Placement fee is $-0-
Ed 1999 Chestnut Thoroughbred gelding. 16 hands. star, LH sock. Ed was rescued from New Holland in June of 2006 along with a number of other horses. He has been pastured with another Thoroughbred rescued that day names Josie (also available to adopt). Ed and Josie's owner has asked Bright Futures for assistance in finding them a new home. They are bonded and while they could be separated, he would prefer that they not be. Ed can be ridden, but has not been since coming off the track in 2006. He has wonderful ground manners and no vices. He will need to be schooled under saddle, and should make a wonderful pleasure/trail horse. Photos were taken at the boarding stable where Josie and Ed have been living for the last couple of years. Ed is currently located in New Jersey Ed's placement fee is -0- as we are asking you to also take Josie.
